Signs and Symptoms of Sinusitis

Sinusitis, also known as a sinus infection, can be a serious health problem. This condition affects more than 30 million people in the U.S. every year. If you suffer from allergies, asthma, or a nasal defect, your risk of sinusitis is increased. Dr. Jesse Tan is an ear, nose, and throat specialist at Tan Head and Neck Center in Long Beach, CA. He can provide you with an effective treatment for your sinusitis.

What is Sinusitis?

The sinuses are air-filled cavities that are located behind the eyebrows and forehead, within the cheeks, behind the nose (near the brain), and on either side of the nose. Healthy sinuses are lined with a very thin mucus layer. This traps germs, dust, and other irritants in the air your breath. Fine hairs lining the sinuses push the particle-containing mucus to the back of the throat where it slides into the stomach and eventually out of the body with other waste matter. A sinus infection involves inflammation of the sinuses, typically due to a bacterial infection. If a sinus infection develops in the sinus cavities close to the brain, if left untreated, it can be life-threatening.
