At Tan Head and Neck Center in Long Beach, CA, serving Lakewood and Los Alamitos, CA, we evaluate patients with ear pressure, muffled hearing, and recurring ear discomfort that may stem from eustachian tube dysfunction. Dr. Jesse W. Tan, MD, FACS, Dr. Jesus K. Tan, MD, FACS, and Dr. Rose J. Eapen, MD, FACS help patients understand why these symptoms happen and what treatment may help. When the eustachian tube does not function properly, even routine activities can become uncomfortable.
The eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the nose and throat. It helps equalize pressure, ventilate the middle ear, and drain fluid. When it does not open the way it should, pressure can build and hearing may feel dull or blocked.
Patients often report ear fullness, popping, clicking, pressure, or muffled hearing. Some also notice imbalance, ringing, or discomfort that gets worse during altitude changes, colds, or allergy flare-ups. Symptoms may affect one ear or both.
Swelling is one of the most common causes. Allergies, sinus infections, colds, and chronic nasal inflammation can all affect the eustachian tube and limit normal airflow. In some cases, structural issues also contribute. When the tube stays blocked, the middle ear cannot regulate pressure normally.
We start with a detailed history and physical exam. We look at your ears, nose, and throat and ask when symptoms started, how often they happen, and what seems to trigger them. We may also recommend additional ENT evaluation or hearing testing when symptoms persist.
Treatment depends on the cause. Some patients improve with treatment that reduces inflammation in the nose and sinus passages. Others benefit from allergy management or other targeted ENT care. If symptoms do not improve with conservative treatment, we may discuss procedural options.
